Organization of Four-Day Training Programme for SSD Primary School Teachers on Multi-Lingual Education
Odisha occupies a unique position with 22.85% of its population being tribal. The state is home to 64 tribes, speaking 21 tribal languages and more than 74 dialects. The ST & SC Development, M & BCW Department manages 1450 schools with primary classes, where over 1.5 lakh students are enrolled. In such a diverse linguistic environment, with students speaking different languages and dialects, addressing them effectively in both their native languages and textbook languages poses a significant challenge in a multilingual and multicultural setting.
Addressing this challenge requires teachers to have foundational training on how to manage multilingual classrooms. To tackle this issue, ATLC, on behalf of the ST & SC Development, M & BCW Department, has successfully organized four-days Language Training Programme for teachers in 28 batches, following the guidelines outlined below:
- Mapping Multilingual Schools and developing a common code to address the issues.
- Addressing common geo-cultural boundaries and mutual intelligibility in languages.
- Utilizing common vocabularies prevalent among children in each geo-cultural zone.
- Connecting the traits with textbooks.
- Developing Teaching Learning Materials (TLM) from local common resources and their applications.
- Empowering students with Flexible Learning Networks (FLN).
ATLC has already organised training programme of the Resource Persons at State level so that they will train the teachers following guidelines.
